Date Night

Mandy Lord sat alone in her room, staring at the little chalkboard on her desk and the piece of chalk next to it, her hands folded in her lap.

The violet glove forms around the chalk and starts to lift it. The chalk even makse the / of the first A, but then keeps going right off the chalk board and into her ceiling.

So it went. More practice. She looks at the clock. More practice tomorrow. Time to get ready for her date.

And Mandy will be in the skies of New York precisely on time.

Brandon used to be terrible with time. Ted Grant and his gym hours, and the laps and all for being late cured him of that. He's there five minutes early, waiting for her.

"Hey, beautiful!"

Mandy beams. "Hi! How's it going?" she says as she flies closer.

[bfg]

"Better as of about ten seconds ago."

[kissmeandstopme]

"Awww. That's so sweet. You didn't get the tickets yet, did you? I was figuring I'd be all feminist and get the tickets and you could get dinner."

He laughs and shakes his head. "Nope, if I was getting the tickets we'd be limited to the nosebleeds, and I figured you might want a better view of your team. I can do dinner, though."

He did ok, but rich he wasn't.

Mandy had a feeling. She would vehemently deny any connection between this and her craving for fairly cheap sandwiches.

"Great. Let's get it, then. I'm so hungry for corned beef I could possibly murder a cow and stripmine for salt right now."

Focusing on training for the Olympics had a way of not paying much, it was true. Helping at Warriors in the summers helped, but still. Sandwiches, however, were always good.

"Great, some really good places here." he agrees, heading downtown. Thankfully, where food was concerned, pretty easy to find variety in New York.

Summer work in the corporate offices paid a little better, indeed.

"Mmm definitely. I love Gateway, but it can sometimes be a bit lacking in deli-type food."

"Pizza, hot dogs and sandwiches... New Yorkers take them very seriously. Competition and all." he replies, settling down out of the way, and heading towards one of his favorite little sit down sandwich places.

"Mhm." Mandy changes into something appropriate, but not too fancy for sandwiches. "It's understandable, really. And just what I need. Been practicing. Sapphires and fine details do not go together, I'm afraid."

Seeing as he has no real tie to the Sinestro Corps, he doesn't bother much with their 'uniform', and just shifts back to more or less normal attire, letterman's jacket and all.

"So I've heard. I'm not the best with detail work myself."

"Yeah. So I'm working on it to see if I can get anywhere. Been practicing with some chalk, like in -- wait, you've probably never read Matilda, since you were a boy. But anyway, I'm basically doing the telekinesis-practice-with-chalk scene from that book. Mixed results, but really, if one sticks with something long enough, one never knows -- oh goodness, that smells good."

"I'm sure you'll get it. Yeah, weird how its easier to lift fifty tons and toss it around than it is to write or something." At least for him - the yellow rings are typically pretty good at subtle and precise. Just not where Brandon is concerned.

"This is one of the five shops that says they have the best corned beef in the city."

"Hmm. They ever want to hire an arbiter for rigorous testing to determine that, I'd be happy to volunteer."

"Had to do any throwing fifty tons around since last I saw?"

"I'm sure they'd love to, if the judges had any authority in the matter. And... had to, no. But practice is a good thing."

She nods. "Definitely. You should probably talk to your Dad about particular issues and health risks with yellow rings."

[bfg]

"Yeah, I will... though really, the big health risk is the obvious one."

[kissmeandstopme]

"The Sinestro Corps showing up and wondering why you haven't shown up for Fanboy Boot Camp yet?" she asked wryly.

[bfg]

"That would be the one, yeah. Dad only had one yellow bastard to worry about. So how about you, any issues with the Love Gestapo yet?"

[kissmeandstopme]

"I did my training. Everyone was really helpful, and most of the girls are really nice, even if there's a few looks if you're not romantically involved or widowed or something. It's the mental-illness possibilities I'm scared of, really."

"That's a good deal, anyway. And you seem to have your head on pretty straight."

[kissmeandstopme]

"Thanks."

Speaking not being rash and stupid.... "How's Liv?"

[bfg]

"Tired, sore, getting back to working out. I think she was going to spend some quality alone time with movies and a couch, last I heard. She did say she liked you, maybe you can catch up with her some time."

[kissmeandstopme]

"That's very nice of her." Pause. "Sorry I didn't have a less uncomfortable healing trick, by the way. It's the only one I've got."

"It healed her, that's all that matters." he replies earnestly. "She's my best friend and partner... sparring and work, now. I'm glad you have any trick at all for that."
